The people you see in these pictures don’t actually exist . AI-generated images of people first appeared in 2014, when the AI tool known as the generative adversarial network (GAN) was introduced. Then the faces generated by AI were black and white and they looked grainy and unrealistic. 🔹 And what do we have today? Full-color, realistic and expressive faces. Can you believe these are not pictures of real people? Well, AI that makes these pictures had a lot of practice and look how far it’s come. 🔹 Moreover, there’s actually a second AI involved in GAN. It analyzes the first AI’s pictures of people and “guesses” whether it’s a real person or not. That’s how the “adversarial” part of “generative adversarial network” actually works. The AI named Philyra can create perfume, though it cannot smell anything. How's that possible? 🔹 Philyra was developed in @IBM with the help of the perfumer David Apel, who has worked in the fragrance industry for 39 years. This is the first collaboration between a human and a computer in perfume creation. 🔹 Philyra analyzed the data about almost 1.7 million scents. She also studied where each fragrance sold best, as well as the age and gender of the customers. 🔹 All that data helped Philyra create two perfumes – Egeo ON Me and Egeo ON You by O Boticário. These scents combine notes of fruits, flowers, woods, caramel, and even condensed milk. Can a computer communicate like a real person? 🔹 The Turing test is a way of evaluating a machine’s intelligence. To pass this test, an AI must behave just like a real person. 🔹 The AI voice assistant Google Duplex, a rival of Amazon Alexa, “took” a Turing test in 2018. During the test it managed to book an appointment at the hairdresser's. The person on the other side of the phone hasn’t suspected a thing. The AI even said typical “ums” and “uhs” used by humans while speaking! 🔹 Google’s assistant was tested in front of an astonished crowd of 7000 people at the annual Google I/O conference. But was the Turing test actually passed? Yes and no. 🔹 First, according to the rules of the test, the audience must be unaware which of the interlocutors is a computer, and in that case the audience knew it perfectly well. Second, the task given to the AI was pretty simple. The AI can talk about making an appointment, but if the topic changed, the AI would fail. A simple question like “Why do you prefer us as your hairdresser?” would overwhelm the machine. 🔹 It is still a breakthrough and a huge accomplishment. We can say that AI passed the Turing test in the domain of making appointments.
