Sochi Olympics 2014 | Aerial skiing. Lots of variations to shoot here. And one of my favorite events to cover. There was a lot of opportunity to try new vantage points. Often overlooked is the crowd. The sidelines. The officials booth. Sometimes sports photogs - including myself - can be so determined to get “the shot,” that we forget to look around. Sochi Olympics 2014 | The ski jump. By far the hardest event to shoot. Athletes in the air, in an arc, in the dark, coming towards you and then past you. Sometimes when shooting sports there is only one prime space to get the best shot. I tried to walk away and shoot from a different location. I even tried from under the lip of the jump ramp itself. Link on my profile. Photographed by Erin Yamagata @erinyamagata  Collage by Mindy Byrd @mindybyrdlegs I haven’t really thought of what I’m doing as raising them to be feminist per se. I’m raising the boys to respectful of everyone, to be mindful of group dynamics and the imbalance/inequality in how people are treated. The concept of feminism is a tad too complex for kids as young as my boys because they don’t understand the motivations behind why there’s a need for a women’s movement in society. It’s the same with racial inequality.  They just can’t wrap their heads around the idea of race yet. If they can’t quite grasp the social construct of race, they don’t really understand the motivations behind racism. Such is the case with the feminism. They don’t understand the motivations behind why men would be treated differently than women. They do have a strong sense of justice and fairness and I think that’s just because they see the world simply. Their world views are very uncomplicated at this age. It’s basically either right or wrong. For them, it is wrong to be mean. It is wrong to be unfair. So they tend to approach relationships that way. I have to be insistent though in making sure that the boys aren’t portrayed as precocious social activists. Everyone in our family is trying to figure life out as best as we can, sometimes the results are graceful but more often than not, it’s a bumbling mess. There are times when my husband, Ben and I still have to remind them to say please and thank you and excuse me, so I’m still fumbling at the basics of parenting. Every human on this planet is socialized. I don’t say this to take away from our responsibilities as parents or their moral agency as individuals. However I am aware that my sons are influenced by outside factors. My husband and I aren’t their only source of input. For that reason, Ben and I put our faith in our circle of friends and family as well as our community to help us guide, nurture and protect them.

Sochi Olympics 2014 | USA vs Canada Women’s Ice Hockey match. Again I wasn’t sure how to shoot hockey, and how to make hockey look unique. So again I went into the stands looking for a way to show fans and the game.
