Thrift by Samuel Smiles (John Murray Publisher, 1875) is one of the first personal finance and self help books. This is the only signed first edition copy I've seen. . Samuel Smiles was an engineer who wrote what was for a long time believed to be the first self help book aptly titled Self Help (1859), which sold 20,000 copies in the U.K. in its first year and along with Darwin's Origin of the Species and Mill's On Liberty, all published the same year, are largely credited with establishing the self reliant ethos of the Victorian age. . Thrift was his third book in the self-help series, but in the intro Smiles states how he wished it would have been the first. Thrift dives deep into how to earn, save, spend, pay down debt, build a healthy home, and has an incredible chapter titled The Art of Living about how to make the most of your life. . This exceptional book is one of my favorites in my collection of old personal finance, investing, and self help books. I've learned as much, if not more, from these books than most written today. Financial Independence (Perry Press, 1909) by Ernest Lyman is what I believe to be the first dedicated book on the topic of FI and #financialfreedom in the U.S. . It reads like it could have been written yesterday and includes over 700 pages of advice, along with over 100 illustrations, on how to save, make, and invest money. There's also an entire chapter on "making money on the side" (no joke). The content is extremely thoughtful and thorough. Even more comprehensive than @financialfreedom ! . The book was supposedly a 5 volume set (this is volume 1 and 2 together), volume 3 was a ledger that was included so you could track your own money. Volumes 4 and 5 were small daily notebooks, one for the "producer" and one for the "housewife" to track daily expenses. . The set was distributed through small local banks in Chicago with the hope that it would encourage people to open savings accounts and save more money. I can't find any info on how successful those efforts were, but given the rarity of the book my guess is not very. . This is a recent find and addition to my collection of vintage personal finance books. Evidently only 3 are known to exist, with two being in libraries. I've never seen one before and quickly bought it. A testament to how much has changed, not only in the past 15 years since I first went, but how change is every moment. . When I was 21 I couldn't wait to party for NYE, when I was 23 all I could think about was playing poker with the best in world at the Aria poker room, at 25 I'd started my #financialindependence journey, got a room on the strip for $18 a night, and no longer craved a poker game. At 30 I was more interested in visiting the neon museum, reading at the pool, and hiking in red rocks.
