A blizzard came along before I even got to post this one. #Stalinist neoclassical #HotelLeningradskaya, one of #Moscow's Seven Sisters skyscrapers and formerly the USSR's most luxurious hotel. Used to hold the Guinness world record for the largest chandeliers in the world. Often cited among the most wasteful examples of monumental Stalinist architecture, its excesses helped pave the way towards the brutalist trends that marked Soviet architecture from 1955 onwards. Namely, the 1955 Regulation on the "Elimination of Excesses in Design and Construction" of the Communist Party's Central Committee put a halt to all future projects of the sort, and the hotel's designers were sacked and stripped of all honours.
