On January 30, TechCrunch staff and two Phantom AI team members were riding in a modified Hyundai Genesis a demonstration of the startup’s Autopilot-like SAE Level 2 partial autonomous system. They were traveling south on Bayshore Freeway, when they got into an accident. During the demonstration, while the L2 system was engaged and we were traveling at 60 MPH, a pickup truck ahead dropped a poorly secured garbage bin from its cargo bed onto the roadway. The car in front, a white Nissan Rogue, applied the brakes to prevent hitting the trash bin, and the driver noticed the sudden stop and applied the brake in the Genesis with force to attempt to prevent a collision, but there was very little he could do at that stage and the car collided with the Nissan. #tech #accident #selfdriving #cars
TimeFlip is a super-simple gadget that lets you easily track how much time you spend on different activities just by flipping it around. It’s a dodecahedron with a tiny accelerometer inside that can tell which way it’s sitting. All you do to operate it is flip it around so the side corresponding to what you’re doing is up; the chip inside sends a signal over Bluetooth to an app on your phone. It comes with a bunch of stickers with icons representing common activities and websites: shopping, eating, reading… even procrastinating. The device has only been available in limited quantities in the U.S., but it should be available on Amazon starting in February. #tech #time #app #gadget
Amazon's long-awaited Spheres are finally open to the public — kind of. The bulbous buildings are a workspace meant for Amazon employees to use and the public to admire mostly from outside, unless you're part of an Amazon HQ tour group or on a field trip from a local school.
Like most adventurous designs the Spheres are divisive: some will call them an eyesore or attention-seeking behavior by Amazon, but others will admire their originality and generous use of space.
