This weekend I am visiting Liliac winery (@liliacwines ) which is known for its fresh, mineral wines and young spirit. The team behind it has some of the most innovative marketing ideas on the Romanian wine scene. The winery is located in the heart of Romania, in a continental climate, on the hills, in a cooler area which makes crisp wines. Pictured here is their classic rose from Pinot Noir, an elegant summer wine with nice acidity and intense rose notes. Summer is here! Mussels and Chardonnay! Spending a weekend at the seaside so it's time to taste some seafood at its finest, in white wine. The pairing was done with Sole Chardonnay. The wine is round, elegant, with some hints of exotic fruits and a nice balance between alcohol and structure. Tasting the new vintage of this rosé from Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. It aims to be a Provence style, but it is a bit more restrained, although the color is just right for the ambitions. The nose is shy, with some hints of red fruits, but more dominated by a rustic note. The taste doesn't bring any additional fruitness, but has a nice balance of acidity and well integrated alcohol. Exquisite Sunday pairing. Wine can be paired with much more than food. A friend who has a passion for cigars challenged me to a difficult game. The aim was to find a good match from his cigar box for the wine I had chosen, although traditionally cognac or whisky are better matches. As a non-smoker and total newbie about this I could rely only on my senses. The wine is Nedeea from Vinarte, a red blend of all native Romanian grapes: Feteasca Neagra, Negru de Dragasani and Novac. It is a full-bodied, high-tannin, powerful wine with some hints of smoky plums and condiments like black pepper and cloves, but not very fruity. It is a though wine, you can think about a milder Rioja to get an idea. My blind choice was a Camacho Robusto, a Dominican/Honduras cigar which then I found out it can be quite rustic, but well structured and full-flavored. Today I am smiling at the wine stand of the Iron Dragons Festival (@irondragonsfestival ) in my native town of Brasov. Here with a sparkling off-dry wine from @casadevinuricotnari. This is made using the Charmat method in steel tanks from a blend of white grapes and belongs to the Zaz line (@zaz.wines ). It is simple, flowery, crisp, good acidity and with some extra sugar to make it easy to understand. You already know I am in love with Feteasca Neagra. This example called Epiphanie from the Vintruvian collection of Via Viticola Sarica Niculitel. It is a brilliant example of what this grape can produce, especially in the hot and sunny climate of Dobrogea, near the Black Sea. The deep ruby color with violet rims shows that this is still young and the tannins confirm it. The nose has spicy, black pepper and cloves notes next to the classic dried plum smell. The taste is juicy, fruity, with a medium plus aftertaste of black chocolate. Today I visited the largest corkscrew collection in the world which is in Bucharest at the Museum of Romanian Records and belongs to a dedicated collector. They have over 30.000 pieces, some over 300 years old, some of which are unique items. I have learned that the corkscrew was inspired by gun cleaning tools which helped remove the lead from the barrel. I have seen corks is all shapes and sizes, ranging from large bar tools to delicate pieces used for perfume bottles. Loved the ring screws and the champagne openers. A great line-up ready for tasting at Crama Oprisor. I've talked about some of these before, like the white Zin, but now I want to focus on the Merlot, which is so juicy and fruity. If bursts with red fruits, including berries, dark cherries and blackberries. It has just a hint of wood which balances nicely the medium acidity and higher alcohol. The name Caloian is an old pagan celebration to bring rain and fertility to the land. Today I am visiting Crama Oprisor (@crama.oprisor ) and celebrating a very important Orthodox holiday in Romania, the name day for Saints Constantin and Elena. This winery even has a dedicated line named Cupola Sanctis which makes the best gift for each name day. The wine is a red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Is has an intense ruby color with violet rims. The nose is intense, with red ripe fruits which turn into delicious cherry pie taste when sipped. Elegant aftertaste of dark chocolate and tobacco.
